We know what are standards but what is a standards-based classroom? This course provides a look into a standards-based classroom, where teachers and students have a clear understanding of expectations (e.g., standards), they know what they are teaching/learning each day, and understand why what is being taught is important. Examples of standards-based classrooms will be examined and the key components for a standards-based classroom will be explored.

Upon completion of this class, students will be able to:

  • Describe the characteristics of  a standards-based classroom.
  • Describe how standards should be used in a standards-based classroom.
  • Demonstrate how Colorado developed standards-based resources can be used in a classroom.
  • Organize an ‘assessment’ mix that support a standards-based classroom.
  • Explain ways that teachers can help all students learn.
  • Illustrate ways that school leadership affects standards implementation.

This class expanded my knowledge of the standards based classroom. It had many resources that I can share with colleagues. Look forward to implementing some changes in the upcoming school year.

This class expanded my knowledge of what the components of a standards-based classroom include. Up until this point, I thought I delivered standards-based instruction; however, I found out quickly that though my instructional techniques were sound, my understanding of a standards-based classroom were sub par. This class has changed forever the way I view my instructional capacity and the way I will move forward in delivering instruction, intervention, and extension to students. Thank you for the experience.

Knowledgeable instructor, lots of great resources and texts, and easy to implement into classroom planning and teaching. The only thing I wish was that the instructor would have opened the weeks early (not just one week at a time), so I had more access and flexibility to complete assignments early.
